Kongjian Yu Awarded The Honorary Doctorate Title in Landscape and Environment by the Sapienza University of Rome

On Friday, April 7, Sapienza University of Rome presented a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Landscape and Environment to Professor Kongjian Yu, Dean and professor of College of Architecture and Landscape, Peking University.


The honorary PhD Degree acknowledges the professor’s original approach to landscape study and design, and his advanced vision of landscape as a tool for planning environmental and territorial transformations in which the architecture of landscape is an "art of survival" that integrates ecological protection models and enhances cultural heritage enhancement.



The ceremony began with a welcome by the president of Sapienza University of Rome Eugenio Gaudio, who spoke highly of Professor Yu’s excellent contribution to disciplines of world’s urban eco-design and landscape design and to the practice of urban design and landscape design. Eugenio Gaudio’s welcoming remarkswere then followed by a speech by Prof. Alessandra Capuano, Coordinator of the Ph.D. Programme and Prof. Giuseppe Scarascia Mugnozza's, both of whom acknowledged Professor Kongjian Yu’s outstanding contribution to the field of landscape education, research and practice and particularly expressed admiration for Professor Yu’s practice of the spirit of Peking University— “Innovation”.


Professor Kongjian Yu then held a lecture entitled "Reconnecting Man and Nature through the Revival of Ancient Wisdom", in which he used actual projects to illustrate the importance and necessity of combining “ancient wisdom of farming and dwelling”,which “have transformed the landscapes at the large scale and sustained humanity for thousands of years”, with “modern sciences and technologies to solve today’s urban ecological problems” instead of building expensive grey infrastructure thatmay generate even more pollution.


Sapienza University of Rome, with a history of over 700 years, is Italy’s most famous university and the largest University in Europe. It currently holds more than 130,000 students and enjoys a renowned and outstanding reputation worldwide.
