For more than a thousand years,young Chinese girls were forced to bind their feet to be able to marry citified elites. Healthy, natural "big"feet were considered rustic and rural. Unhealthy, deformed, and citified small feet, deprived offunctionality and malodorous,were considered"be autiful." Foot binding (along with many othercultures'body-deforming practices)was appreciate d as a rite of urbanity.
