摘要:
Constructed wetlands for stormwater comprise a sustainable development practice,as they can be implementedat various scales, can be distributed or centralized, andcan produce multiple benefits. These benefits include economic efficiency, due to lowcapital cost, low operation cost and low cost of recreation,as well as social andecosystem benefts. At the neighbourhood or municipal level, stormwater treatmentwetlands can serve as urban design and open space elements to structure and inspireurban development. Free water surface constructed wetlands are often created to manage stormwaterrun-off rates and volumes, and to eliminate contaminants. They are immediatelyrecognizable as marshes, but bio-retention basins (rain gardens)have standing wateronlyduring and immediately after moderate and severe storms.Although thesewetlands also feature plants, many of them are not commonly found in marshes.Nevertheless, these treatment landscapes are vertical subsurface or horizontalsubsurface fow wetland designs that have been modifed to respond to the periodicfilling and draining caused by storms. The planning, design, performance andsustainability features ofstormwater wetlands and bio-retention basins are the topicsexplored in this chapter.
