The editorial series MAESTRI DELPAESAG-GIO has been created to disclose a culture of urban landscape design and contemporary metropolitan territories, through the knowl-edge of the thought and the design works of the great Masters of Landscape Architecture and Garden that characterize the various Eu-ropean and international Landscape Schools, since the second half of the twentieth centu-ry to nowdays. As the pioneer of Water Urbanism and of the Sponge City model, Kongjian Yu is not only one of the most influential landscape architects on the current scene, he is also a keen observer of the present. His design proposals and meditations on China’s urban planning provide a practical-conceptual reference for the emerging questions regarding our planet, increasingly threatened by environmental catastrophes, hydrogeological risks and water crisis. Inspired by the foundational geometries rooted in rural landscapes, Kongjian Yu proposes low-tech water infrastructures that, by activating an adaptive behavior, recreate intermediate landscapes between city and nature, concrete representations of the friendship between man and the element that generates and preserves life more than any other.
