The Red Ribbon - Tanghe River Park won ASLA design honor award

April 9th, 2007, "The Red Ribbon—Tanghe River Park", which was designed by Turenscape and Peking University Graduate School of Landscape Architecture, won the ASLA Design Honor Award of 2007. It is attributed to Professor Kongjian Yu and his group after their awards of Zhongshan Shipyard Park in 2002, Campus of Shenyang Architectural University and Growth Pattern of Taizhou City Based on Ecological in 2005, and the Huangyan Yongning River Park in 2006.

For Tanghe River Park, until July 2006, it took about only one year to complete its design and construction. With the least labor and fund, this project has made a dull and flicker river into a dramatic urban open leisure space. While preserving as much of the natural river corridor as possible during the process of urbanization, it designed a “Red Ribbon”, which is made of fiber steel, stretches for 500 meters along the riverbank, integrating a boardwalk, lighting, seating, environmental interpretation, and environmental orientation. 2007 Professional Awards Jury Commented that,“A celebration integrating artistic elements into a natural landscape in an ingenious way. Very dramatic, yet highly functional. It’s transformative and curative.”

Under the process of urbanization, this process was likely to happen again at the site, meaning the natural river corridor was likely to be replaced with hard pavement and ornamental flower beds unless the new red ribbon design was implemented. This project of Tanghe Park demonstrates how a minimal design solution can achieve a dramatic improvement to the landscape.

Founded in 1899, the American Society of Landscape Architects is the national professional association representing landscape architects. Beginning with 11 original members, ASLA has grown to more than 16,200 members and 48 chapters, representing all 50 states, US territories, and 42 countries around the world. ASLA promotes the landscape architecture profession and advances the practice through advocacy, education, communication, and fellowship.

Since the first award of Zhongshan Shipyard Park in 2002, China include Taiwan, has honored about 9 awards, including 7 awards for General Design Category and 2 for Analysis and Planning Category. Besides the 2 awards received by EDAW, SWA and EDSA in America and Atelier DYJG, in China, the other 5 awards were all received by the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture at Peking University and Turenscape.

Turenscape was honored awards frequently, and this rarely phynominon has attracted the attention of Landscape Architecture area in the world. Its works were published widely by professional journals abroad, even as cases of teaching in foreign universities such as America. Following that, the contemporary Landscape Architecture of China has made its stride to the world. Since 2003, Professor Kongjian Yu has been invited to make the keynote lectures on many vital conferences such as the IFLA World Congress and ASLA Annual Meeting. In 2007, he was invited to make a keynote lecture in the International Urban design conference in Australia. His attitudes, such as “The Art of Survival” and “Negative”, have also made great influence. In 2007, he will make his global itinerant lectures in more than 10 universities, including America, India, Mexico, Australia and Taiwan in China.
