Turenscape's project Boston The Big Dig draws to a close

Boston The Big Dig, a 15 billion dollar project, known as the project of the century in America is drawing to a close. In the year 2003, Beijing Turenscape Design Institute together with the local design firm, CRJA, won the design competition for the Chinatown Park within the Big Dig project. After nearly four years of work, the project is nearing completion and will be opened to the public in June. Recently, president of Turenscape and the chief designer of the project, Professor Yu Kongjian, traveled to the construction site to meet with the local government officials and site engineers.

Local media and professionals generally believed that the landscape design for Chinatown Park is the bright spot of the entire “Big Dig” project, “Although this is not the biggest, it is the most unique…showing the rich Asian flavor" (The Boston Global). Bamboo, as the landscape motif, becomes folding screens one by one fixed by red still frame, creates the entrance Pailoo for Chinatown that mimics the entrance of an “ancient” Chinese village. It also echoes the existing entrance Pailoo written “Tian Xia Wei Gong” in distance. A meandering rivulet streams out from the paddling spring inside the new gate and ends in the middle of the square right on the center of the park, telling the story of early Chinese immigrants and expressing the sentiment of “a long way from the source” and “never to forget where one’s happiness comes”. A symbolic paddy field, recalling the memories of old times, sits at the red entrance telling the story of millions of Chinese immigrants by using contemporary landscape design language, helping the local Chinese community to realize their sense of belonging and identity, and showing their hopeful pioneering spirit.

The Park will greatly improve the urban environment quality of Boston’s Chinatown, and set off a new round of real estate investment. The surrounding properties of the park are renewing to meet the enormous popularity and consumption prospects brought by the park open. Also the original building that has been abandoned is to be transformed into a 27-story five-star hotel. Beijing Turen Design Institute and the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture of Peking University have earned great reputation from the local majority, government, professionals and media.
