The Turenscape studio was founded by Professor Kongjian Yu of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. With over 300 employees, Turenscape is currently one of the largest landscape design studios in China. Its projects cover a wide range of disciplines, thanks to the collaboration of different yet complementary professionals in the field of architecture, landscape design, urban planning and environmental design. Many of Turenscape's projects have won international awards, including five ASLAs in Design and Planning and two Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Awards. The projects stand out for their innovative design that is nevertheless respectful of the environment. The floating Gardens, Yongning River Park Taizhou City, China, 2004
Project team:
Yujie Liu, Gang Zheng, Shihong Lin, Tailong Liang, Dongyun Liu, Yuanyuan Jin, Weijing Ning, Mingyu Ge

This 21-hectare park along the Yongning River in the Chinese city of Taizhou serves a dual purpose: it provides public access to a strategic area of the city and acts as a barrier against floods. The park is composed of two layers: a natural layer that overlaps with a human layer. The natural matrix is composed of wetland and natural vegetation and on top of this we have the floating gardens of humanity. This is composed of trees, paths and “story boxes” -open architectural elements placed along the pathway that recount the story of the local inhabitants and landscape. The use of technology has been kept to a minimum so that the focal point of the landscape is nature.

Ride Ocean Breath——the Wetland and Bird Museum of Qinghuangdao China,2008
Project team:
Shihong Lin, Xiangjun Liu, Cheng Cheng, Xiang Long

The landscape architects at Turenscape were commissioned to recover the natural habitat of this beach which was used as a migratory stop-over point for birds. The project involved a number of elements, including the reconstruction of the natural habitat and the construction of a bird museum. The museum faces the ocean in order to take advantage of the sea breeze during the hot and humid summers. The beach was recovered as a natural habitat for birds through the creation of river water ponds on firm ground and small round islands in the middle of the artificial lake, which serve as shelters for the birds. Wooden walkways enable visitors to watch the birds without bothering them.

Shenyang Architectural University Campus China,2003
Project team:
Kongjian Yu, Shihong Lin

The new campus of Shenyang University occupies an area of 80 hectares in a suburban area of the city. The project had to be completed with a limited budget and within a short timeline. The final result combines the district's agricultural economy with its educational mission. Rice, black wheat and autochthonous plants were introduced to preserve the agricultural landscape while providing students with an opportunity to learn from it. In addition to creating awareness of the importance of the land and agriculture, the project aims to demonstrate how effective land management can be productive and profitable. Hence, farming and recreational use of the land by the people are not incompatible.
