Turenscape winner of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement

The Waterfront Center in based Washington D.C. has recognized during 22 years the most outstanding Waterfront projects around the world along with remarkable professionals in the Urban, Architecture and Landscape Fields. Turenscape has been distinguished as a winner in the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Category with: “A Regenerative Surgery: The Beach Restoration Qinhuangdao City, P. R. China.” of the Excellence of the Waterfront Program.

The Project Awarded used various Regenerative Design techniques in a heavy eroded, badly abused and decaying beach has been ecologically recovered and successfully transformed into a well visited place, demonstrating landscape architects can professionally facilitate the initiatives of rebuilding a harmonious relationship between man and nature through ecological design.

The beach is located along the Bohai Sea shoreline of Qinhuangdao city, a touristic coastal city in North China’s Hebei Province, 6.4 kilometers in length and an area of 60 hectares. The whole site was in an environmentally and ecologically damaged condition. The costal sand dunes were heavy eroded, the costal vegetation was decaying and the beach was deserted and littered; Prior unwise development had destroyed the costal wetland and left it full of debris.

The intention of this project is to rehabilitate the damaged natural environment, restore and unveil to tourists and local residents the beauty of the site while transforming a former degraded beach into an ecologically healthy and aesthetically attractive landscape.

The winners of the Waterfront Center’s 23nd annual “Excellence on the Waterfront” awards program were announced in Seattle Washington by Jury Chair Mike Burke, attorney who shared the responsibility with King Hershey, Port Authority of Kansas City, Kansas City, Missouri;  Fran Hegeler, senior director/development manager, EDAW/AECOM, San Francisco, California; Jeff Sheldon, senior coastal engineer; Moffitt and Nichol, Raleigh, North Carolina; Harris Steinberg, executive director, Penn Praxis, the clinical arm of the School of Design, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Michel Trocme, partner, Urban Strategies, Toronto, Ontario, Canada..

The jury deliberated in Cape May, New Jersey for two days in September giving the Top Honor Award 2009 to “The Confluence Project Vancouver and Iwaco, Washington and Troutdale, Oregon”, same Award given to Turenscape last year with the Zhongshan Shipyard Park in Guangdong Province.

The Waterfront Center launched the “Excellence on the Waterfront” Awards Program to encourage communities, developers and design firms to strive for well-designed undertakings. Entries are taken from around the world and for both projects and plans.  In 1993, the Center established the Clearwater Award to recognize voluntary, grassroots efforts by citizens. The award was named for the project Clearwater, an educational, environmental clean-up and cultural non-profit organization focused on the Hudson River founded by folksinger and activist, Pete Seeger.
