A 'sponge city' is one that incorporates the water cycle into urban planning and uses various elements to retain, slow down its flow, and purify it after rainfall. This concept was coined by the urban planner, architect, and researcher from Peking University, Kongjian Yu, in 2013. Its goal is to control urban flooding, reduce water pollution, and recycle rainwater. Some cities in China have successfully integrated landscaping into their urban fabric to such an extent that it has become a model exported to other countries, such as the United States.
