The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has selected Carol R. Johnson Associates to design a one-acre park in Chinatown that will be part of recovered Surface Artery, the agency announced Wednesday. Carol R. Johnson Associates is teamed up with Turenscape, a Chinese landscape architecture firm, for the $2.2 million project. Work is expected to begin in March on the park, which is bordered by Chinatown on the west, Essex Street on the north and the surface artery on the east. Carol R. Johnson has also built Hi Hwa Park in Chung-Li City, Taiwan, the Riverfront Plaza in Hartford and the Old Harbor Park in Boston. Mass. Turnpike Chairman Matthew Amorello announced the selection, saying he expects it will become a signature feature for the neighborhood. The authority said it will also be able to use the designs submitted by the three other finalists, Halvorson Design Partners, Carr Lynch Sandell & Denig Partners Inc. and Richard Burke Associates.
