The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority today announced the selection of Carol R. Johnson Associates of Boston to design a park for the residents of Chinatown and surrounding neighborhoods.
The approximately one acre parcel in this portion of the Central Corridor is bordered by Chinatown to the west, Essex Street to the north and the current Surface Artery to the east. The team headed by Carol R. Johnson Associates was one of 4 firms chosen to present their design ideas to the selection committee.
Working with the Chinatown Park team will be Turenscape (arguably China's foremost landscape architecture firm), Communication Arts, Inc., Judith Nitsch Engineering, Lim Consultants Inc., Shekar & Associates, Chia-Ming Sze Architect, Inc., Stull +Lee, Ripman Lighting and the International (a Chinese Cultural Institute).
The Chinatown Park is expected to cost $2.2 million to design and build, with community meetings and conceptual design work starting in March.

"This should be the signature park for Chinatown," said Massachusetts Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew J. Amorello. "The designer will be working closely with the community to make that happen."
Among its projects, Carol R. Johnson has built Hi Hwa Park in Chung-Li City, Taiwan, the Riverfront Plaza in Hartford CT, and the Old Harbor Park in Boston.
The Turnpike Authority will also be able to use the designs submitted by the other four finalists -- the teams of Halvorson Design Partners, Carr Lynch Sandell + Denig Partners, Inc. and Richard Burke Associates.
