Kongjian Yu (1963–2025), a visionary landscape architect and urban planner, fundamentally transformed how the world understands the relationship between water, cities, and nature. He proposed that instead of fighting water with concrete, cities should embrace it—absorbing, storing, and reusing it through what he called the “Sponge Planet” vision. His approach reshaped urban infrastructure into living ecological systems, placing landscape architecture at the core of climate adaptation and water resilience. Yu’s untimely passing during a field trip in Brazil brought profound global mourning, but his ideas continue to guide efforts toward creating greener, more sustainable cities.
