The experts brought a series of problems that are in the way of the development of construction of Beijing and the nation to the focus. What on earth is the meaning of New Townism when the term is created only in China? How to build cities and towns on the best scale? What are the problems specifically considered by the developers when they plan new towns? Has Beijing already become an overly developed city that expands unlimitedly? The experts had a hot discussion over the topics, offered helpful thoughts and theories support for the new towns development strategy. Professor Kongjian Yu, talked about the three ideal that may give people inspiration to answer the problems. The first one is that we can use at the early stages of a new town development, is learning from western concepts of urban development and use it as reference. The second is that new time brings new lifestyle, thus people’s understanding of the new city or town has been impacted and changed. And the third one is about the developers’ own point view that has also come to a new stage of aesthetics. Yet there is also something unchangeable whatever the time is, that is the relationship between human and nature, and people’s feeling of belonging to the communities. What we need to improve is the work pattern of planning, the current way of management, and the legal system made by government, but all of the above need a long-term strategic planning to implement step by step. The process maybe last 10-20 years or longer, to reach our goal we have to make sure it is carried out scientifically, integrally and deliberately. The 3-hour meeting cannot answer and solve all the problems that were raised, and everybody still felt there were too much to talk about, and so much work needs to be done. However, the dream of creating a natural and comfortable environment is still there.
