Abstract:
Before the Chengtoushan Archaeological site was discovered in 1979, with remains of China’s oldest city and the earliest record of rice cultivation, the area had been covered by a mound, surrounded by intensive cultivation. Located within the fertile floodplain of Dongting Lake in the remote province of Hunan, it was soon designated as a national heritage site.
