Abstract：
Sanya, a tourist city on the tropical island of Hainan in the South China Sea, presents the typical distortions of unbridled growing tourism. Over just three decades, the waterways have lost their ecological and hydraulic functions following the creation of new developments. Concrete floodwalls, built to block seatides and stormwater from the upper land, have compromised the hydraulic regime, causing urban inundation.
