Project Profile

1. Project Statement

The National University Science Park of Henan Province is located in High-Tech Development Zone of Zhengzhou in the northwestern part of Zhengzhou City, with approximate area of 20.07 hectares. Due to the high-standard plan and management, it has become one of the most famous university science parks in China, and sets the model for science park development of the province. Depending on universities, it intends to promote knowledge production, technology innovation, scientific and technical achievements transformation, high-tech enterprise incubation and the social service provision.

2. Design Strategy

Here follows the five features of the design:

1) Module combination, individual buildings dominancy

Through various ways of unit combination, modular groups with Individual high-quality buildings are formed up in the research area, incubation area and industry area, in which way the needs of the enterprise scale in different development periods could be satisfied. It promotes the image of enterprises, which can be seen as the major feature and the label of the park, and strengthens the identity of the park.

2) The place of communication, the source of innovation

Communication encourages the sharing and spread of information; it is the source of innovation. Communication space includes the official space and unofficial space. The official space is approved by investigation the main force for innovation, so therefore, the unofficial communication space is paid particular attention during the design. The measures include: various recreational sites and trails in the concentrated green; an overhead walking system with combination of secondary functions, main pedestrian walkways running through the research area, along which there is post office, shops, restaurants, bars and other entertainment places; and courtyards between buildings where people can rest and communicate.

3) Complex functions, boosting development

Single-functioned design is no longer adapted to the rapid development of the science park. In the master plan of the park, besides the research, incubation and manufacture functions, we also add the supporting system which consists of law, consulting, patents, registration, banks, finance, and venture capital services, and life services including commerce, catering, entertainment, leisure, sport, postal services, clinics, and so on. In every different functional zone, there are facilities like restaurants, coffee shops and book bars, for people to rest and communicate.

4) People oriented, humanity design

The project is a knowledge intensive park, where the human resource is the key to development. Thus, the principle of people-oriented design should be stressed. To achieve this goal, the overhead walking system, the multifunctional pedestrian, the resting platforms, roof gardens and atrium courts are all designed humanely to meet the psychological needs of people during different activities.

5) Multi-leveled traffic, convenience and efficiency

In addition to the ground motor roads and pedestrian systems, an overhead walking system is constructed which connects directly all functional zones and is not disturbed by motor traffic. It helps to constitute a convenient and efficient multi-level traffic system together with the ground system, which links the different zones as a whole, and also enriches the landscape forms in the park.
