1. Project Statement
Fenghuang Road, located in Sanya, Hainan. It is an important traffic artery in downtown Sanya city. The design boundary of Fenghuang road landscape improvement project ranging from West Sinopec gas station to Luhutou Plaza in the total length of 11.8km. The total area of the improvement project is 75.3 hectares. The total area of phase one is about 45.8 hectares; the total area of phase two is about 29.5 hectares.
2. Objective and Challenge
Fenghuang Road is one of the most important traffic arteries in downtown Sanya City. It is a city highway between Sanya Fenghuang Airport, downtown area and several scenic spots. The road is essential to the city both ecologically and economically. Before the improvement project the site is in a chaos of plants and construction waste with disconnected ecological function. The design team intended to bring a better avenue to the city that matches the international first-class tourist city image.
3. Design Strategy
Fenghuang road is segmented according to different environmental landscape elements around Fenghuang road. They are: farmland section, urban section, hillside section, and greenland section. According to different sections, the corresponding design strategies are put forward from three aspects of ecological green infrasturcture, slow running system and planting system.
1)Farmland Section
Eco-Stormwater Management System
According to the current situation of farmland roads, the stormwater management module is constructed to combine farmland and rainwater purification wetland.
Ped and Bike System
To provide a better pedestrian and bike system to the city, the design set up independent walking trails and to connect with the city's biking trails, the design team combined bike service nodes with the park.
Planting Design
The planting design of the improvement project aims to highlight the bright and bright tropical road conditions; the sidewalks are planted with rain trees to provide shade for walking; the green belt beside the farmland is planted with coconut trees, under the trees, the view is preserved and the view of the rich pastoral view is left out.
2)Urban Section
Eco-Stormwater Management System
According to the current situation of urban roads, the stormwater management module is constructed by utilizing the green space along the Fenghuang Rd.
Ped and Bike System
To set up comprehensive ped and bike system, and to enable the connection with the urban transportation system.
Planting Design
To establish a greenbelt system by utilizing local planting materials and native species. Bougainvillea is a local shrub which has been widely use among the city. The design team take good advantage of bougainvillea by utilizing this local shrub in the greenbelt system. To improve the tropical beauty of the city, fruit trees, palm trees and rain trees are also widely used in this project.
3)Hillside Section
Eco-Stormwater Management System
According to the current situation of roads, the stormwater management module is constructed by utilizing the roadside green space and the vertical space of the hillside.
Ped and Bike System
To improve the urban pedestrain and bike system by connecting urban transportation system with transportation service system.
Planting Design
To establish a greenbelt system by utilizing local planting materials and native species. Ficus tree is a local canopy tree which has been widely use among the city. The design team take good advantage of this species by utilizing Ficus tree in the greenbelt system. To improve the tropical beauty of the city, fruit trees, palm trees and rain trees are also widely used in this project.
4)Greenland Section
Eco-Stormwater Management System
Increase rainwater facilities in combination with road conditions; build rainwater organization patterns in combination with parks and roadside green space. Remove the original hard revetment of Shanshui International Park, transform it into an ecological revetment, and build a cascade of purification wetlands in combination with water bodies.
Ped and Bike System
To set up an independent slow-moving road and connect with the city's slow-moving system, combined with the park to increase the bicycle service node and the pedestrian service node.
Planting Design
By using the large crowns of rain trees, the design team establish a “green tunnel” for the city. It is also built in combination with the park boundary. The park retains the growing plants and replants the coconut trees. The adjustment of the tree planting form creates a variety of landscape space.
4. Conclusion
Through the design, Fenghuang Road has well exemplified the concept of City Betterment and Ecological Restoration Programs. The improvement of Fenghuang Road turns out to be a success of gray infrastructure transformed into green infrastructure. The Fenghuang Road is built into a multi- function ecological complex, a greenbelt for the city, and a green tunnel for local ecosystem. Not only enhance the overall image of the city portal highlights the characteristics of the city, but also for the public and tourists to provide slow commuting, leisure and recreational places.
