1. Project Statement
The landscape lake is located in the core greenbelt of the new campus of Zhengzhou University. It is the most important water feature landscape area on the campus. To the east, it is adjacent to the school's library and core teaching area, and to the west, it is near the school's sports facilities. It serves as a significant recreational area for students during their free time and is also a green core landscape area for the school.
2. Objective and Challenge
Due to the lack of necessary landscape planning and design phases, the current situation is as follows: monotonous shorelines, rigid water body contours, disconnected water surfaces, lack of activity and rest spaces by the water, and the loss of various attributes such as ecological, human-friendly, harmonious, local, and cultural qualities of the central landscape water body.
Two axes run through the entire water landscape design concept. The historical axis: by exploring local cultural characteristics and refining cultural points suitable for the style of Zhengzhou University, a landscape corridor from history to the future is displayed, highlighting the cultural nature of the campus's core landscape. The ecological water system landscape axis: constructing a wetland ecological landscape water system that fully reflects the regional characteristics of the Yellow River basin.
3. Design Strategy
Based on the current site conditions and around the axes of the landscape concept, the layout of the core greenbelt landscape lake is appropriately adjusted:
3.1 Construct a water system that fully embodies the ecological landscape characteristics of the Yellow River basin, showcasing different river landscape segments (river source landscape, midstream river landscape, downstream wetland landscape, ecological forest).
3.2 Break the existing roads that separate the water surface and replace them with bridges, connecting the water bodies and extending into the green spaces on the north and south sides, establishing harmony between the water bodies and the landscape.
3.3 Transform the eastern shore into a friendly and pleasant paved area, with steps descending from the roadside sidewalk to the water surface, increasing the water-friendly space, equipped with shading trees and benches. From south to north, arrange several cultural-themed leisure plazas and multifunctional spaces under the trees along the historical axis, using landscape elements to highlight the cultural nature of the campus's core landscape.
3.4 Transform the western shore into a natural gentle grass slope, equipped with aquatic and wetland plants to fully display the natural wetland ecological landscape.
4. Conclusion
Detailed designs have been made for nine key landscape nodes: the river source landscape, water-friendly boardwalk, Wen Ding (Bridge No. 1) square, Bo Yi square, Chengming Gaoyuan, Zhongyuan square, Star-gazing and Shadow-observing, Railway Culture square, and Feng Tian He Xiang.
