Project Profile

1. Project Statement

The Dahaidao Meta City is located in the International Adventure Park in Hami, Xinjiang, China. This area has a very dry climate and frequent sandstorms, creating a unique Yardang landform. The design aims to create a desert oasis using greenhouse spaces and advanced technologies like Mars colonization and space farms to explore future ways of living.

2. Objective and Challenge

The design focuses on "minimal intervention," with most of the buildings placed underground to avoid heat and protect the original landscape. The structures above ground are shaped to follow wind patterns and ancient marine textures, blending naturally with the environment and creating a scene of "swift winds over the sand sea, a grand path navigating the whales."

3. Design Strategy

The design of Dahaidao Meta City faces challenges like extreme climate conditions, energy self-sufficiency, environmental integration, and combining technology with nature. To tackle these challenges, several innovative strategies are used:

• Underground Spaces: Most usable spaces are underground to handle temperature differences and create a comfortable indoor climate.
• Earthwork and Soil Balance: The design balances the soil on-site to reduce construction challenges and harmonize with the natural landscape.
• Minimal Intervention: The above-ground structures follow wind and ancient ocean patterns, creating a form like "whales swimming through the sand," which reduces environmental impact.
• Sustainable Systems: Solar panels on the "whales" and wind energy from ventilation corridors power the ecosystem. New energy systems and plant greenhouses help the site become self-sustaining over time.

4. Conclusion

The design of Dahaidao Meta City overcomes natural and technological challenges, creating a world-class adventure destination that harmonizes with nature and blends technology with exploration. It serves as a test ground for future living. During the day, people explore among the "whales," with glimpses of indoor greenery adding vitality. At night, the "whales" glow softly, creating a unique nighttime experience in Dahaidao.
