Project Profile

1.Project Statement

Changbai Mountain Jianshui River National Wetland Park is located in the southeast of the Chibei District in the Changbai Mountain Protection and Development Zone, Jilin Province, and serves as an important gateway to Changbai Mountain. The service center project is located at the southwest corner of the Jianshui River National Wetland Park, acting as the main entrance of the park. The building is adjacent to the wetland natural recovery area on the north and south sides, with the artificial intervention wetland recovery area on the east side, and is adjacent to a major traffic road on the west side.

The current status of the area is mostly new reclamation land. The park design gradually restores the forest wetland landscape through natural and artificial recovery processes, and a service center building integrated with the landscape is set up at the entrance to the wetland conservation area, providing functions such as tourist services, real-time monitoring of the wetland habitat center, wetland exhibition hall, and wetland science education. The floor area is 4,862 m2, and the land is in a high-intensity development zone.

2.Objective and Challenge

The site is a flat wasteland, although located in a high-intensity development zone, it must still adhere to the principles of low-impact construction due to its proximity to the natural wetland. Moreover, as the project is situated in the Changbai Mountain visual axis area running north to south, the design must be considered in conjunction with the overall landscape visual axis.

  • While undergoing high-intensity development and construction, the impact on the surrounding wetland ecology should be minimized.
  • The architectural form should be integrated with the wetland landscape in terms of spatial form and scale.
  • The functions should meet the requirements of the upper-level planning and satisfy the functional needs of the visitor center, with a rational layout of circulation and programs.

3.Design Strategy

Using the strategy of earth-covered architecture, the green-roofed slope on the north elevation extends from the ground to the roof ridge line. When viewed from the wetland park side, the building disappears into the landscape, merging with it. Only the green architectural skyline is seen, echoing the Changbai Mountain range in the distance, and visitors only feel the distant mountains and the nearby wetland park landscape. On the south side of facade facing the entrance square, the tall exhibition space presents a modern grand entrance.

1. Integration of earth-covered architecture and landscapes: The service center building enhances the entrance image on the south side, while the earth covered building on the north side blends seamlessly with the wetland park landscape.

2. Immersive learning and visiting experience: Provide wetland science exhibitions, real-time monitoring of wetland restoration, education center, and the architectural form is interwoven with the surrounding wetland gardens and ponds, offering an immersive viewing and learning experience.

4.Conclusion

The Jianshui River National Wetland Park Service Center employs an innovative approach that, while providing high-intensity development and construction to meet the needs of science education, exhibition, and tourist sightseeing, also allows the architectural boundaries to blend seamlessly with the landscape, to make the lowest impact to its surroundings. The architectural form is interwoven with the surrounding wetland gardens and ponds, leaving the wetlands to the nature, making it a paradise for natural plant succession.
