Project Profile

1. Project Statement

Yan'an is in the southern part of northern Shaanxi on a loess plateau with hills and valleys. The city center follows a narrow "Y"-shaped river valley, making it a linear city. The project is in Yan'an New District, next to the government offices and citizen service center, covering about 20.62 hectares (309.3 acres). The site is "T"-shaped, with the north side facing government offices and roads, and the south side extending along a central axis. It should complement nearby cultural facilities.

2. Objective and Challenge

Goals:

Extend the Ecological Corridor:
Connect the site with Dujiagou and Qiaogou ecological drainage corridors to form a continuous urban ecological structure.
Provide Ecological Services:
Create a green area that offers ecological benefits, like cleaner air and water, and improves the environment in the public service area.
Ensure Rainwater and Flood Safety:

Use the green space to collect and manage rainwater, helping to prevent floods and droughts.

Challenges:

  • How to create a positive city image on the new district's main road.
  • How to reflect the "Yan'an Spirit" in the design.
  • How to manage rainwater and prevent flooding on unstable loess soil.

3. Design Strategy

Central Axis Lowering:

Design a terraced rain garden that collects rainwater and can be used as farmland during dry periods.

Space Composition:

Create a sunken green corridor with eleven earthen mounds to give a sense of order and ceremony.

Cultural Expression:

Use earth mounds and traditional cave-style buildings to include park facilities and highlight Yan'an's culture.

4. Conclusion

The park design uses local plants and drainage methods to handle the loess soil. It respects local culture and nature by using local plants and materials. The park offers spaces for outdoor activities and social gatherings. The design makes use of the site's natural terrain to save costs and maintain balance. The park becomes a distinctive city space, offering opportunities for public gatherings, entertainment, and serving as a city landmark.
