1. Project Statement
The Bao'an Public Art Center is located in Shenzhen's Bao'an District, specifically to the west of the Bao'an District Government in the central area of Bao'an. The site is within a transitional zone identified in the 2004 Bao'an District detailed planning, adjacent to the city's green belt. This prime location makes it a valuable urban core site. The surrounding area is densely developed: to the west is the relatively less dense Bao'an District Government area, which has some greenery; to the north is a high-density residential area; to the east is a mixed-use area with residential, commercial buildings, and a primary school; to the south is a high-end residential and commercial complex under construction. The project will connect a series of high-quality cultural buildings, coastal parks, and public squares in the Bao'an Central Area, becoming a landmark public cultural complex in the western part of Shenzhen. The project site covers 14,310 square meters, with a floor area ratio of 3.41, and a planned building area of over 84,000 square meters. All roads surrounding the site have setback requirements.
2. Design Strategy
Shenzhen has a typical subtropical marine monsoon climate, with abundant sunshine and rainfall. The core design concept of this project is to respond to the site's natural conditions accurately. Rain, as a romantic and lively element, is incorporated into the design in a green, eco-friendly way, leading to the concept of the "Rain Box." This design creates a contemporary public cultural building that is modern, functional, site-responsive, and lively.
Ecological Aspect of the "Rain Box":
To effectively handle Shenzhen's heavy rainfall, the design integrates rainwater as a key element. The roof includes large water storage tanks to collect rainwater, which is then filtered. The treated rainwater flows down the building's double-glazed facade, creating a unique rainwater facade. The water then cascades into artificial terraced gardens at the ground level, filtering through each terrace to form a rainwater garden, thus making rainwater the central theme of the project.
Cultural Aspect of the "Rain Box":
Rain has long been a poetic and artistic inspiration. The misty rain scenes are among the most captivating artistic images. The Bao'an Public Art Center, as a public building with strong artistic attributes, uses rain as a fitting and natural way to express and interpret its architectural identity.
Technical and Economic Indicators:
Total Site Area: 14,310 square meters
Building Footprint: 7,931 square meters
Total Building Area: 85,072 square meters
Floor Area Ratio: 3.41
Building Density: 55.4%
Greenery Analysis:
The site will be fully landscaped, with urban terraces and rainwater gardens integrated throughout. The entire area is designed as a green landscape, combining building spaces with greenery, including grass, shrubs, trees, terraces, and rainwater gardens to create various green spaces. A small green plaza and gathering area will be placed in front of the building.
3. Conclusion
These architectural and landscape strategies create a harmonious coexistence with the site and surrounding buildings. The gentle flow of treated rainwater down the building's facade gives the building a unique ecological and artistic expression, making it a beloved urban landmark and an irreplaceable cultural landscape.
