Yichang Yunhe Park covers 12 hectares and is located in a low-lying area within the hilly terrain of the city. Originally a site of 12 abandoned fish ponds, it was ingeniously transformed into a multifunctional ecological park. The former ponds were repurposed as natural water purifiers, integrated with woodlands, boardwalks, skywalks, and pavilions. With minimal intervention, the park now functions as an "urban ecological sponge"—purifying polluted canal water, mitigating urban flooding, preserving site memory, and providing a unique recreational space for surrounding communities.
One of the park’s most distinctive features is the Sky Umbrella Corridor, an elevated walkway that weaves through the park, taking full advantage of the elevation difference between the city roads and the park terrain to create a unique spatial experience. Interspersed along the corridor are platforms, rain shelters, and two viewing towers. These are strategically placed to respond to the site’s micro-topography—some extend into the former fish ponds, while others embrace elevated slopes—creating moments of spatial drama and interest. Vertical Experience: Below the corridor lies a network of wetlands and clear water bodies; above, red and yellow decorative structures form the "umbrella" canopy. Walking along the suspended path feels like entering a painting—immersed in fresh breezes and forest scents, with vibrant colors overhead enhancing the sense of wonder and spatial novelty.Horizontal Experience: The journey alternates between dense tree canopies and expansive views of the canal. The path creates a rhythm of enclosure and openness, offering a layered and immersive spatial narrative.
By day, the red canopy structure acts as a visual beacon for the park. At night, warm yellow lighting glows from the viewing towers, guiding visitors home. In spring and summer, the red canopy contrasts vividly with lush greenery, symbolizing the vigor of life. In autumn and winter, it harmonizes with the golden foliage, embodying the gentle passage of time. Since its completion, Yunhe Park has been deeply loved by the public—where children play in the elevated pavilions, couples stroll through flower-filled paths, newlyweds take photos in scenic meadows, and families of all ages gather to enjoy nature. The park has become a beloved green haven at the heart of the city.
