Project Profile

Within just three years, a once-abandoned land enclosed by concrete floodwalls in the heart of Sanya has been transformed into a lush mangrove park—an ecological haven where nature and people share the convergence of tides and freshwater. Here, visitors can stroll through the landscape and enjoy birdwatching amid the sounds of nature.

The design takes advantage of a 9-meter height difference between the road and the water surface, creating a terraced ecological corridor system that captures and purifies urban runoff. Public spaces of varying elevations are embedded throughout the site. A network of elevated walkways weaves with the terrain, floating above the natural setting and leading people into the treetops with views down onto the mangrove canopy. Five viewing pavilions are carefully placed in scenic and tranquil areas of the forest, providing necessary shade and shelter in Sanya's variable climate. These modular concrete boxes are built to withstand tropical storms, and their diverse orientations offer optimal sightlines for birdwatchers.

Nestled between mountains and water, with egrets in flight and winding paths through cool and shaded groves, the completed mangrove corridor has become a beloved public retreat. Cycling, jogging, and walking in the park have become a leisurely way of life for nearby residents.
