Yongxing River Aerial Concrete Bridges

Located in Beijing’s Daxing District, the Yongxing River Greenway reimagines traditional urban flood control infrastructure. Instead of a hardened channel, it transforms the seasonal drainage corridor into a resilient green sponge that retains and filters stormwater while creating a productive, ecological, and community-centered green infrastructure.

Formerly known as the "Heaven River," Yongxing River is a major stormwater corridor in the region, with a 300 km² catchment area and a 37 km-long stretch connecting to the Beijing Daxing International Airport. Since the 1960s, the river had been channeled and concretized, though remnants of mature willow and poplar trees remained on site. The aerial concrete bridges not only enhance the river's flood control capacity but also provide much-needed recreational infrastructure for surrounding communities.

The completed bridges offer jogging and cycling paths along the greenway, creating an attractive and functional public space. Five pavilions are dispersed along the path, designed as artistic structures for rest, gatherings, and scenic views. Since completion, the Yongxing River Greenway has become one of the most beloved public spaces in the area, frequently featured in local media and praised for its integration of flood resilience and quality of life.
