Project Profile

The Chengtoushan Skywalk is located in the expansive rice fields of the Dongting Lake alluvial plain in Lixian County, Hunan. With a typical span of around 9 meters, the bridge is classified as a small-scale structure. To minimize disturbance to the archaeological site and surrounding farmland, the bridge is elevated above the fields.

Suspended 4 meters above ground, the glass skywalk reduces human impact on the land while offering an elevated platform with expansive views—including unobstructed sightlines to the archaeological remains in the northern part of the park. The glass deck allows sunlight to penetrate, ensuring sufficient daylight reaches the crops below. This unique design transforms the skywalk into an immersive observation platform, allowing urban visitors to witness and experience the entire rice farming process—from planting to harvest—and interact closely with local farmers. Walking along the bridge becomes an exploratory adventure.

The structure is anchored and stabilized by four ramps extending in different directions, enhancing both structural integrity and access to the surrounding field paths. The construction of the glass skywalk has attracted a significant number of tourists—especially children and students—turning what was once a monotonous rural landscape into an exciting and educational destination.

The project reimagines the dynamic process of agricultural production as a landscape experience. It breathes new life into the long-obscure Chengtoushan ruins, buried in a remote and impoverished region for decades. Not only does the design preserve the authenticity and integrity of the ancient city site, but it also transforms it into a valuable space for tourism, leisure, and experiential learning.
