Yanweizhou is located in Jinhua’s Duohu district, west of Dongshi Street, north of Sanjiang International Garden, at the confluence of the Yiwu and Wuyi rivers. The site enjoys a rich ecological and cultural setting, adjacent to historic landmarks such as Guchengzi, Bayong Tower, and Wuzhou Park to the north, Ai Qing Park and Cherry Blossom Park to the south, and Wubaitan Wetlands across the river to the west. It is both a witness to the cultural heritage of Jinhua and an integral part of its modern ecological urban fabric.
Much of Yanweizhou has been developed into Jinhua’s cultural center, including the iconic China Wu Opera Theater, a sculptural, curvilinear architectural landmark. However, the wide riverways that separate the site from the surrounding urban areas made access to the cultural facilities difficult for residents.
The Bayong Bridge project aimed to: Provide public access to the island while preserving the rare riverine floodplain habitat in the city center; Create a flood-resilient, water-adaptive landscape that harmonizes with seasonal changes; Connect the northern and southern halves of the city, integrating the urban layout with natural and cultural features; Establish a dynamic and flexible pedestrian bridge that spans three rivers and six banks, linking urban districts with Jiangzhou Park and cultural destinations.
The bridge design draws inspiration from the local folk tradition of the “Bench Dragon” — a long, undulating festive dragon dance made of linked benches. This motif informed both the form and color of the bridge: vibrant red and yellow alternate to reflect local customs and celebratory culture. The bridge deck is surfaced with sustainable bamboo-wood composite material, while illuminated railings are made of translucent fiberglass, adding a soft glow at night. With its serpentine form, Bayong Bridge is not only a transit route but also a place of experience, attracting over 40,000 users daily. It has become a beloved civic landmark, strengthening public identity, cultural pride, and emotional connection to place.
