According to the previous “Public Solicitation for Bridge Design Proposals of the South Plaza of Canton Tower and Pedestrian Connectivity Bridge to the North Bank of the Pearl River” announcement, the project’s initial design intent is to rapidly develop the Canton Tower and surrounding area into a night economy demonstration zone with more convenient transportation, better environment, more complete facilities, and richer connotation. This will drive high-quality development in surrounding areas such as Media Port, Pazhou, Pearl River Cruises, and Haixinsha, realizing the vision of “Old City, New Vitality.” The project will first initiate construction north of Shuangta Road, namely the South Plaza of Canton Tower. The pedestrian landscape bridge is also part of the South Plaza development. By connecting the pedestrian bridge, pedestrian flow will increase, encouraging people to linger along both banks of the Pearl River and promote the development of the riverfront areas, integrating north and south into one, becoming an urban link connecting the two sides. Drawing on examples like the River Thames in the UK, the plan is to build a pedestrian landscape bridge connecting Ersha Island and Canton Tower, achieving slow-traffic interconnection between the two sides of the Pearl River, enhancing the ability to rapidly disperse crowds, and overall improving the environmental quality of Huacheng Square, Haixinsha, Ersha Island, Canton Tower, and other areas.
The main bridge adopts a 240-meter main span steel arch cable-stayed bridge. The east side bridge deck is about 451 meters in length; the west side main girder is about 296 meters long. The pedestrian bridge has a total width of 20 meters at mid-span, with 6 meters wide on the west side, 8 meters wide on the east side, and a 6-meter-wide central stairway. The entire project covers about 15,025.9 m², including approximately 9,329.6 m² of river area and 5,696.3 m² of land area.
According to the project design scheme, the bridge form is rooted in Lingnan culture, incorporating elements representing Lingnan culture such as Cantonese opera water sleeves, Guangzhou’s floating flower market, and Lingnan ancient guqin music. The bridge includes slow lanes, fast lanes, bicycle lanes, and leisure seating steps. The deck is divided into sections for passage and leisure. The west side serves as the main traffic zone, accommodating pedestrians, barrier-free access, bicycles, etc. Continuous sun and rain shelters are set along the walkway for comfortable all-weather, wind- and rain-proof passage. The east side is the main leisure and viewing area, with viewing platforms and leisure seating steps.
Once completed, standing on the bridge, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the modern Pearl River New Town and the natural landscape of the Pearl River, known as the mother river. The bridge will become one of Guangzhou’s most beautiful urban landscapes. The connection provided by the pedestrian bridge will increase foot traffic, encourage people to linger on both sides of the Pearl River, drive development of both riverbanks, and unify north and south, making the bridge a vital urban link.
