Project Profile

The core area of the design and study is located in the historical part of the city, which as many other places lost its vitality because of the urban economic transformation due to the degradation of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. As developing over time, on one hand because of the degradation of the aged buildings, poor infrastructures and the poor environmental conditions, the old town gradually becomes a forgotten corner of the city; on the other hand there are a few remaining historical relics in the old town area, carrying the memory of urban development and profound cultural heritage, it is a valuable historical and cultural resources of the city. In the current process of rapid urbanization, a considerable portion of the old town had gone forever with new developments, causing the loss of the urban culture’s identity, "thousand cities with same scene" becomes a general characteristics of Chinas urban landscape. However, there is a growing awareness that the rich history and culture of city as well as the distinctive landscape characters are irreplaceable capital for urban development and have an important meaning for urban, social, economic and cultural developments. How to deal with the development of the old town on this context? Simple tracing over the traditional style or simply copying the dated patterns of the historic city is proved both undesirable. And discovering cultural character of citys old areas, reflecting the collective history, culture and reality, reflecting the characteristics of the times and culture, while giving the new function of its development is the right way to promote historical and cultural heritage and to revitalize the historical areas.
