The Jurong Lake Gardens has an inseparable link to the modern history of Singapore. In the early 60s, the development of the Jurong Industrial Estate saw the transformation of Jurong from a swamp along the west coast of Singapore into Singapore’s first industrial estate, which spearheaded the young nation’s rapid industrialization in its early years. The Jurong Lake Gardens ( ie Chinese and Japanese Gardens ) was created in the 70s, as part of the overall plans for this landmark development. It formed an attractive public garden and recreational space within the industrial zone to enhance the overall living environment of the area.
Fifty years later, as Jurong progressively transform itself into the Jurong Lake District and become a major regional hub with intensive developments which will fuel the next phase of growth for Singapore, the Jurong Lake Gardens will take on a new role as ‘Singapore’s New National Gardens in the heartlands’.
To us, this project is therefore not just another landscape master plan exercise but a unique opportunity to transform the Jurong Lake Gardens truly into ‘a people’s garden’ which is intricately connected to Community, sensitively integrated with the City and deeply rooted in Place and Memory, through an integrated and inspired approach to urban, architectural and landscape design supported by strategic infrastructure.
The master plan envisions Jurong Lake Gardens as a unique and memorable place - a ‘people’s garden’ which is intricately connected to Community, sensitively integrated with the City and deeply rooted in Place and Memory, through an integrated and inspired approach to urban, architectural and landscape design supported by strategic infrastructure.
