Project Profile

1. Project Statement

The Taihang Skywalk over the Red Flag Canal solves pedestrian and automobile circulation by creating an overhead walkway that navigates complex terrain, organizing the spatial experience around science, education, and landscape conservation. The spirit of the Red Flag Canal is interpreted to respect the historic spirit of the place while using modern language to highlight the spectacular landscape.

The Taihang Skywalk is located at strategic and scenic entrances to the Red Flag Canal and Youth Cave in Linxian County, Anyang City. The elevated walkway is simple in design, allowing it to effortlessly blend with the surrounding environment over an area of 1,314 square meters, including a ramp portion of 1,918 square meters. The overall length of the walkway is 353 meters.

2. Design Strategy

The sloping walkway was built over the parking lot and entrance to the Red Flag Canal. Because of this location, the ground area was limited to maximize room for car parking. At the same time, the structure spans a provincial road, safely separating pedestrian and automobile traffic. Tourist and commercial spaces are integrated with the walkway, allowing for fluid pedestrian movement and maximized usable space. Steel, metal materials, and wood guarantees maximum recycling of construction materials.

3. Conclusion

The walkway minimizes intervention on the existing site to allow for greater access to the general public for walking and sightseeing in an otherwise complicated and difficult mountain route.
